Tattoo removal is a procedure done to try to remove an unwanted tattoo. Common techniques used for tattoo removal include laser surgery, surgical removal and dermabrasion.
It is always advisable to get any unwanted tattoo removed at a recognized skin clinic under a trained dermatologist & aesthetic surgeon.
You may be a candidate for tattoo removal if:
Laser tattoo removal procedure
Step 1: Dermatologist examines the size of your tattoo and depending on its age, design, the colors used, the type of ink used and how dark the tattoo is, she decides the number of sessions it would require to remove your tattoo.
Step 2: During the session, a numbing cream is applied on the tattoo region. One doesn’t need anesthesia for this procedure.
Step 3: Laser is targeted on the skin area with the tattoo. A session usually lasts for 10-30 minutes.
Post each session, once the skin has absorbed the particles, the tattoo area may appear to be white, reddish and swollen. The swelling and redness vanishes within weeks of each treatment and the skin regains its original tone after 6-12 months of the last treatment.
One may require repeated sessions depending on the kind of tattoo they have. Usually a gap of 4-8weeks is kept between each session to allow the skin to get rid of as much pigment as possible.
Dermabrasion is an invasive tattoo removal procedure wherein your doctor uses a medical grinding tool to remove the outer layers of the skin which contains the ink. It is a painful procedure which is conducted usually with local anesthesia and in some cases even general anesthesia. The wound takes a long time to heal and one may even have to go for repeated sessions.
Surgical method is another invasive method which surgically removes the skin that contains the tattoo. This leaves a scar behind and like dermabrasion, it is conducted with a local anesthesia. This is not a practical treatment for big tattoos.
Chemical peels use mild acids that are applied on the skin to remove the outer layer of the skin which contains the ink of the tattoo. This is not a painless procedure and it might cause moderate pain. The recovery time may be up to one week depending on the wound.
The potential risks of tattoo removal include, but are not limited to:
