What is Seborrheic Dermatitis?

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammation of the upper layers of skin that causes red, itchy skin that sheds scales.

Seborrheic dermatitis is a condition that is frequently aggravated by cold weather conditions.

What are the signs and symptoms of Seborrheic Dermatitis?

The following are some of the other symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis. However, each person may experience symptoms in a different way. Symptoms may include:
  • Scalp itchiness, dryness, or oily scales
  • A yellow or red scaly rash along the hairline, behind the ears, in the ear canal, on the brows, around the nose, and/or on the chest.

How is Seborrheic Dermatitis Diagnosed?

A thorough medical history and physical examination assist the doctor in identifying seborrheic dermatitis.

Treatment

  • Modifying the diet to include hypoallergenic foods with enough amounts of vitamin A, B, C, minerals, zinc, and selenium.
  • Medications available over the counter Antifungal drugs include medicated anti-dandruff shampoos that help clear the scalp. Zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid ketoconazole and selenium sulphide are ingredients in shampoos that help prevent fungus growth on the scalp. Here’s how these ingredients can help:
  • Pyrithione Zinc: This is especially beneficial due to its antifungal and antibacterial qualities, which aid in the removal of itchy and flaky skin fungus. This chemical is also used in creams, lotions, and face washes to treat seborrheic dermatitis on various parts of the body, such as the chest and back.
  • Ketoconazole: This antifungal drug fights against fungal infections on the skin and helps to avoid seborrheic dermatitis flare-ups.
  • Salicylic acid is the most common anti-dandruff agent; it balances the scaly scalp caused by uneven sebum production.

Topical Corticosteroids: These drugs reduce inflammation, red spots on the skin, and provide relief from itchy skin. They come in the form of creams and ointments.

Calcineurin Inhibitor Creams:

These creams act directly on the immune system to reduce inflammation, redness, and irritation associated with seborrheic dermatitis.

Topical Antifungal: When topical antifungal treatments fail to function, oral antifungal medications are recommended.
