Who is an ideal candidate for laser hair removal?

Almost everyone who has unsightly body hair they would like to have permanently reduced is a good candidate for laser hair removal. Although the results of the procedure will depend on the amount of hair in the area and the patient’s skin type, laser hair removal is a safe and effective way to remove unwanted hair.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal is actually laser hair reduction (LHR) treatment and it works by the destruction of the hair follicles thereby disabling hair production for a variable duration of time. The laser emits a beam of energy that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. The energy fired by the Laser is converted to heat, which damages the hair and inhibits or delays future hair growth and the capacity to re-grow. In 5-6 sessions, it drastically reduces hair growth, thus resulting in permanently smooth, soft skin.

What to expect in laser hair removal treatment?

  • In preparation for laser hair reduction sessions, one must avoid plucking or waxing at least for 6 weeks before the procedure. Only shaving is acceptable and is advised within 24 hours before the treatment as it only cuts long hair from the surface and keeps the hair follicles intact, thereby preventing the risk of burning hair stubbles during the laser process.
  • Before the procedure, the treatment area should be cleaned. Then a cooling gel is applied to safeguard the skin against heat and help the laser beams penetrate better. The laser equipment settings are adjusted according to skin color, location, and thickness of hair.
  • During the procedure, the laser beam is passed in pulses into the skin. The intense heat generated from the laser causes damage to hair follicles. In the treatment area, slight discomfort may be felt which is often described as a light rubber band snapping against the skin or a warm pinprick sensation. The time taken for completion of the procedure varies depending upon the size of the target area. Laser hair reduction needs to be performed for multiple sessions (3 to 8) which are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. After the laser hits the hair follicles, it takes days to weeks for the hair to shed. The results may vary among different people based on the location, density of hair, and hair thickness.
  • After the procedure, mild redness and swelling may be seen but these effects are relieved within a few hours. Ice packs, lotion, or anti-inflammatory creams may be applied over the treated area to soothe the skin. The doctor recommends using a broad spectrum sunscreen daily over the sun-exposed areas and avoiding sunlight as much as possible. Sun tanning must be avoided both before and after the laser treatment session.

How to care for skin after laser hair removal?

After a laser hair removal treatment, the patient may experience slight redness and bumps at the treatment area which usually resolves within a few hours. The discomfort caused to the skin can be alleviated by applying an ice pack, cooling gel, or using a special cooling device along with a laser instrument. If the person witnesses an immediate skin reaction, it can be relieved by using a topical steroid cream on the affected skin area. For skin crusting, an antibiotic cream may be applied. It has been seen that darker pigmented skin absorbs maximum laser and is subjected to more discomfort which lasts for long.

How Many Sessions of Laser Hair Removal Do You Need?

Most people need somewhere from 4 to 6 sessions for optimal results, and it’s encouraged that you come back for maintenance treatments once a year or so.

Is there downtime?

No, laser hair removal generally does not require any real downtime. Immediately after having laser hair removal, your treated skin will be red and swollen. Despite this, most people return to their everyday activities.

Recovery timeline

With the higher success rates of this treatment, it is not surprising that the recovery is almost instantaneous. The hair from the treated area doesn’t shed out immediately but takes a day or two. Some patients experience no regrowth for months, and some even have reported not seeing any kinds of hair regrowth for over a year. The hair that grows back is generally a lot lighter and finer.

Post-treatment Care

  • Avoid sunlight or UV exposure and use sun tanning beds at least for 6 weeks after the laser session and even between the scheduled treatments. It is advised to wear broad-spectrum sunscreens of at least SPF 30 daily to protect the skin from sun damage throughout the treatment as well as 1-2 months after it.
  • Gently cleanse the treated area with mild soap and pat dry the skin. There must be no rubbing, picking, or scratching of skin for the first 48 hours.
  • Avoid applying lotions, deodorants in underarms, moisturizers, and makeup for the first 24 hours as it may irritate the skin.
  • Exfoliate to speed up the shedding of dead hair which usually occurs gradually within a couple of weeks after the procedure.
  • The laser hair removal method is the best approach to get rid of body or facial hair without the risk of having ingrown hair. It is a widely accepted procedure used for aesthetic purposes and is considered to be safe and effective for even sensitive skin areas. It is an economical approach that works with full accuracy and is a speedy process with no downtime.
