Chemical Peels

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a technique that involves the application of a mild acid solution to the skin, primarily on the face, neck, and hands, in order to improve the properties of the skin. Get the best Chemical Peel Treatment in Mumbai for skin glow at Viva Aesthetic clinic.

The chemical solution thus applied to the skin causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off, allowing for the regeneration of new skin. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother than the older one because it has come up as a result of the regenerative mode the tissues had got into.
The most commonly used chemicals for chemical peeling are alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and phenol.

Types

Chemical Peels are classified into three broad categories.

Superficial Peels: Superficial peels are typically performed with Alpha Hydroxy Acids or other mild acids capable of penetrating only the outer layer of skin. These peels gently exfoliate the skin, improving mild cases of skin discoloration and rough skin texture.

Medium Peels: Using Glycolic or Trichloroacetic Acid, these peels can penetrate up to the middle layers of the skin to remove damaged skin cells. The treatment aids in the reduction of age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, freckles, and moderate skin discoloration.

Deep Peels: Use higher concentrations of Trichloroacetic acid or phenol to deeply penetrate beyond the middle skin layer and remove damaged cells. The treatment is effective in removing moderate lines, freckles, and shallow scars.

What happens during the Chemical Peel procedure?

  • During a light chemical peel, your doctor will apply a chemical solution containing glycolic acid or salicylic acid to your skin with a brush, cotton ball, gauze, or sponge. The treated skin will begin to whiten.
  • While the chemical solution is on your skin, you may experience mild stinging for up to 10 minutes.
  • To remove the chemical solution, your doctor will apply a neutralising solution or wash the treated skin.
  • During a medium chemical peel, your doctor will apply a chemical solution containing trichloroacetic acid, sometimes in combination with glycolic acid, using a cotton-tipped applicator or gauze. The treated skin will begin to whiten.
  • After a few minutes, your doctor will apply cool compresses to the treated skin to soothe it. You might also be given a hand-held fan to keep your skin cool. However, there is no need for a neutralising solution.
  • For up to 20 minutes, you may experience stinging and burning.

What are the aftercare instructions following Chemical Peel Treatment?

Superficial peels: Superficial peels usually take one to three days to heal. The treated skin turns red at first and may scale slightly. Moisturization is beneficial, and sunscreen should be applied liberally and on a daily basis.

Medium Peels: Medium peels heal in seven to ten days. The skin becomes red, as with superficial peels, but it also swells. Only during this time does the skin begin to crust and peel off. According to dermatologist recommendations, the skin should be soaked daily for a set period of time before applying ointment. Sun exposure should be avoided entirely until the healing process is complete. Camouflage make-up can be applied after a week, but a follow-up appointment is required to track progress.

Deep Peels: Deep peels take 14 to 21 days to heal. The treated area is bandaged to prevent foreign particle contact. The skin should be soaked four to six times per day, followed by the application of ointments as directed by the dermatologist. A thick layer of moisturiser should also be applied for up to three weeks after the treatments. Sun exposure should be avoided for three to six months after the treatment. Camouflage treatment may be worn after two weeks only.
