Scar Revision

What is Scar Revision?

Scar revision surgery is used to improve the appearance of scars. Scar revision surgery may include scar repositioning. Scar revision surgery is often requested for aesthetic reasons. Scar revision surgery is often required by doctors to restore function to the affected body part or to ease symptoms such as pain and discomfort.

Who are the IDEAL CANDIDATES for scar revision?

The following people are the best candidates for scar revision surgery:

  • Scars caused by trauma, accident, prior surgery, or tumor
  • Have a functional loss, such as nerve injury
  • Have significant aesthetic concerns as a result of the scar’s appearance
  • Looking for a long-term solution
  • Desire a natural appearance

What are the types of scar treated by scar revision?

Contractures are large scars that strain on skin, causing it to tighten. Contractures may also impact the underlying muscles, joints, and tendons, restricting the affected body part’s function and movement.

Burn scars: that heal as a broad scar or puckered scar, perhaps resulting in contractures.

Facial scars: Scars on your face that are unsightly or interfere with your facial expressions.

Acne:  Causes multiple types of scars like box scars, rolling scars, ice pick or pitted scars.

Blistering infections: such as chickenpox may cause punched out scars

Trauma scars: Scars caused by trauma or past surgery that are long or irregular.

Keloid Scars: that protrude beyond the borders of the initial wound or incision are known as keloid scars. Scars that are dark, thick, raised, and uneven are common, and they may be uncomfortable.

Hypertrophic scars: are similar to keloid scars in that they are restricted to the original wound or incision borders.

What are the types of scar revision?

Because each scar is unique, there are several treatments for treating or reducing the appearance of scars. Common treatment options include:

Laser Treatments/Dermabrasion: Laser or dermabrasion treatments may be helpful for depressed scars, such as acne scarring. These procedures resurface the skin in order to achieve a smoother and more equal skin tone. These treatments are excellent for shallow scars and depressions, and they may be used as part of a comprehensive scar revision therapy plan.

Steroid Injections: Steroid injections may be used alone or in conjunction with other revision procedures. Certain scars, such as keloids (tough, thick scars that grow and stick out from trauma sites), may be reduced in size with the procedure, however it is not always effective on its own.

Topical Therapies: Topical drugs may help heal scars and may be administered as part of a treatment plan. They are often used in conjunction with other treatments.

Surgical scar revision entails surgical excision of scar tissue, followed by sealing the incision and properly suturing the region to minimize the size and visibility of the scar. The scar should be smaller and less apparent once the new incision heals. This approach is utilized for scars that are large and/or broad and do not respond to less invasive correction methods.

What is the procedure in Scar Revision Surgery?

Some scar revision methods are generally non-invasive and may be done under local anesthesia. Depending on the size of the scar, surgical scar revision treatments may involve relocating the scar, reducing mass, or just refining the incision to generate a smaller scar. Dissolving sutures will be used.

Laser treatments and dermabrasion may also need some kind of anesthetic, depending on the extent of the process. Laser treatments employ precise light beams to renew and smooth the skin. Dermabrasion is just smoothing down the skin to remove abnormalities like acne scar depressions.

How long does it take to complete the procedure?

Depending on the size of the scar, the procedure normally takes around a half hour and is performed under local anesthetic.

What is the recovery time required for scar revision?

Depending on the kind of scar revision, patients may need to rest for few days. Scars normally seem worse before they improve, and the color will begin to diminish after the first healing is complete. During the first healing period, pain relievers may be taken to relieve any discomfort, and patients should carefully observe any instructions and activity restrictions provided by their doctor.
